If you feel like you’re constantly on a diet, but still struggling to lose weight (and keep it off), then it may be time to ditch the diets.

These days it’s pretty normal to hear that people are constantly on a diet.

Some people might even think you’re “weird” if you aren’t on one (just to be clear, I’m not one of those people).

Most diets start off with positive intentions (like losing a few kilos, getting cholesterol under control, feeling more energetic), but soon spiral to a place where the diet is no longer serving its original purpose.

When the diet you’re on becomes stressful, unrealistic, and obsessive it’s a sign it’s time to ditch the diet. 

Ditching the diets will be the best thing you can do for your mental health, and in turn your body will thank you.

The constant rollercoaster and stress caused by dieting (which often leads to overeating) tend to do more harm than simply listening to your body and fuelling it in a way that feels good.

If you can relate to any of the following, then it’s probably time to ditch the diets and try a non-diet approach instead.

1. You can’t keep the weight off

This is called yo-yoing.

You might hop from one diet to the next thinking you just need to try something different.

You might find yourself thinking that this next diet is going to be the one that’s going to work.

I hate to be the one to bring you back to reality, but it’s not.

Because diets don’t work. They actually lead to further weight gain in the long term.

If your weight is constantly going up and down, then it’s a sign that dieting is not for you.

With weight fluctuation you might start bashing your body, beating yourself up, or thinking something is wrong with you that you can’t stick to the diet.

Getting back to the basics like listening to your body and eating in a way that makes you feel good is key to maintaining a consistent body weight.

2. You have low energy in the afternoon

There are a lot of diets out there that just focus on restricting calories, which, logically will help you lose weight in the short term.

However, it also means that you aren’t giving your body the fuel it needs to sustain your energy levels and leaves you feeling tired and fatigued.

Do you find yourself trying to start your day by being “really good”, meaning you end up going a long period without eating a meal or snack? That can send your blood sugar and energy level crashing in the afternoon.

It’s important to eat at least every 4-5 hours throughout the day to help maintain a steady blood sugar level.

If you find yourself regularly in an afternoon slump it’s a sign that you’re ready to ditch the restrictive diets and get back to feeling full of energy all day long.

3. You’re eating foods you don’t enjoy

Ever been on a diet where you have to eat bland and disgusting foods or you’re restricted to consuming mummy shakes or blended foods?

It’s pretty gross hey? And not only that but it can be expensive too!

Food is a great pleasure in life and one that I believe everyone should enjoy.

So, if you’re finding yourself eating foods that you think you should instead of foods that you think you’d like then it’s time to ditch the diets and get back to enjoying life.

4. You have issues with your gut health

Having a healthy gut should mean more to you than being annoyed by a little bloating or heartburn. Like Hippocrates said, “All disease begins in the gut.”

Your gut is connected to everything that happens in your body. That’s why I almost always start helping my clients to lose weight by optimising their gut health.

A lot of diets are a bit of a one-size fits all approach.

However, we are all different and what will work for one person may not necessarily work for another.

The reason why some people have diet success and others don’t is often due to the health of our guts and what bacteria is there.

A non-diet approach factors in the health of your gut and what you need most (not some one-size-fits-all diet approach to losing weight).

5. You start binge eating and breaking your diet rules

Your diet might have started with a simple rule like; don’t eat more than 1600 calories per day.

After a little while though, you probably ended up with a long list of foods you “can” have and foods you “can’t” and rules that might look like:

  • Don’t eat after 7pm
  • You can’t eat any sugar except 1 square of dark chocolate
  • Only snacks can be fruit
  • You have to work out every day

You get the point. Keeping track of all those diet rules is hard work and ends up leaving you feeling stressed, overwhelmed, deprived, or like a failure (because how can you possibly adhere to all of those?).

All these feelings actually lead to overeating because the moment you break one rule, your all or nothing thinking takes over and you end up getting the “what the hell” effect.

If this is happening for you, it’s time to slowly ditch the diets and these diet rules.

6. Your mental health and wellbeing is suffering

Lots of chronic dieters (myself included) romanticise their first diet.  It was so effortless and easy.  The weight just came off without feeling like you were even trying.

But, that first dieting experience is the hook that lures you into the destructive cycle of weight loss and weight gain.  With each new dieting attempt, your body adapts and learns to survive (cause, that’s its job – to keep you alive at all costs.  Not helping you get a killer thigh gap).

With each failed diet attempt, your learned helplessness gets stronger and stronger resulting in feelings of failure.  But, it’s not you who’s failed the diet.  It’s the system of dieting that has failed you.

Diets are a cycle of negative emotions and restrictive eating that leads to an unhealthy relationship with food – and weight gain!

A non-diet approach to weight loss will teach you to abandon all the diet rules you’ve ever been exposed to and start listening to the cues your body is giving you about when you need to eat and when you need to stop.

Once you master this skill your guilt around eating disappears, you stop obsessing about dieting and you no longer overeat.

7. You feel like food is controlling your life

Do you ever find yourself thinking about what you can eat later?

Or how many calories or points you’ve already had today?

Perhaps you’re stressing over if you can enjoy a glass of wine and some nibbles with your bestie?

When your mind is overrun with diet thoughts and food rules there’s less room to be present and engaged with everyone around you.

Parties and lunches out with the kids are spent with the constant noise from the food police in the background.

If this is happening for you, it’s definitely time to change your mindset when it comes to food and move away from dieting.

Remember, life is meant to be enjoyed (and that includes food).


So, there you have 7 of the most common signs it’s time to ditch the diets and try a non-diet approach instead.
